Day 137: Temple Bar and Guinness Storehouse

O’Neill’s Pub

Day 137.    After we napped, we hit the streets near our hotel, walking and taking in the area.  Our hotel is right in the heart of an area called Temple Bar.  It’s referred to as the Bohemian quarter of Dublin.  Some say it’s way over commercialized.  Case in point, our hotel is right next to a Hard Rock Café.  Personally, I love this area!  It’s charming and adorable with its cobblestone streets, cafes and Irish bars. Taxi driver Jerrold recommended O’Neill’s and it did not disappoint.  I highly recommend the Guinness Irish Stew and a pint of Guinness.  Totally awesome.  After O’Neill’s we stopped off at a bar called Bank where we imbibed a Bushmill’s Blackbush.  We wrapped up the night at our hotel for a snack of nachos (surprisingly not bad) and another Irish whiskey.  It was an amazing first night in Dublin.

We fell asleep around 11pm Dublin time, woke up once at 4:12am then fell back asleep until 12:22pm!  13 hours.  Guess we needed it.  Only problem was, we were supposed to meet the crew downstairs to head to the Guinness Storehouse for a pre-scout tour.  Luckily, our Irish host had partied a bit too much last night (“I drank my tits off last night,” he later informed us) and was a good hour and a half late.

The Guinness Storehouse is incredible!  The history is incredible.  Arthur Guinness had an incredible vision and the foresight to sign a 9,000-year lease at a flat rate of 45 pounds a year.  Smart man.  At the end of the tour, you arrive at the Gravity Bar for a free pint.  At one point over the loud speakers an alarm sounded.  Next we were asked to immediately evacuate the premises.  The head bartender donned an orange fire marshal jacket and asked everyone to begin heading for the stairs.  We decided if we were going to die, we were going to die with our Guinness pints in our hands.  Turned out it was just a fire alarm.  We walked down to the floor below us and grabbed lunch at Gilroy’s.  I had another Guinness and another Guinness Irish stew.  Delish.

Guinness Irish Stew!

And now, we’re resting in our hotel room, getting ready to go out with Peter, the Irish drink expert on the Bar Rescue show, James, the production manager and Jason, the production coordinator.  I’m not sure where we’re going but I have a feeling it will involve the oldest bar in Dublin with an incredible history, just like everything and everyone in Ireland.

Until tomorrow, create from what you have…history.
