Day 145: Digging In, Going Deep

Day 145.  I was up at 3:37am this morning.  A little later than yesterday.  So that’s good.  I was going to try and go back to sleep but this time I couldn’t stop thinking about Screenwriter Monica’s new pages for the first act.  I stayed up and finished writing extensive notes—for the first time—on the new pages and her script in general.  I emailed them to her and Director Brenda in preparation for our meeting on Friday.  The thing that strikes me most this morning is I realize I can’t just phone in the script development process.  And that’s what I’ve been doing.  Mainly because I was so slammed with finishing the documentary editing.  But now that I’m on my venture full time, I can’t hand it off anymore.  My goal is to be a creative producer of narrative feature films and it’s time to focus on the creative part.  I have to dig in and figure out the movie I want to produce and why I want to produce it and guide the process to a brilliant blueprint the entire team is chomping at the bit to create.  How in the hell am I ever going to get one of these movies made if I never get a script ready that I’m crazy excited to make?  And the most important thing is “crazy excited to make.”  Without that, you can’t sustain productivity to get through the challenging times.  The times when you can’t look at a single frame one more second or you’ll throw all the footage into the garbage.  The times when you think, “dear god, what have I wasted my precious life and meager savings on?”  Those times.  Because when a story is important enough for you to tell, you’ll eventually remember why you’re telling it during the darkest hours.  What is this particular story and why am I telling it?  Well, I’m not going to lie, I have to figure that out.  So, the theme for today is digging in and going deep.

Until tomorrow, create from what you have…and dig in and go deep in the process.
