Day 180. Twitter Motivation

Day 180. Today I learned that in Brazil they speak Portuguese, not Spanish. Who knew? Probably a lot of people, just not me. Not my proudest tweet. I’m practicing my French with a woman whose dream is to live in France someday. And I’ve met a delightful astrologist, Alayna, in Indiana, who reminded me that Mercury goes retrograde on July 15th. I’d better get those contracts signed! I’ve connected with, learned from and been motivated by almost everyone I have followed or who has followed me on Twitter. There are too many to list in one daily report but here are a couple more I just can’t resist.
There’s this indie filmmaker, AD Lane, and a group of kids from Ashford, Kent—well, I don’t know if they’re kids but their copious enthusiasm makes me think of youthful exuberance. I was “introduced” to them by @mock_ing_bird AKA Shadowolfhunter. She’s a writer and her first published novel will be finished in a few weeks. She’s been quite a wonderful Twitter welcome wagon and she’s connected me with all kinds of interesting and lovely people…and she has a really cute dog. Oh, which reminds me of Chico Hombre! But he’s another story. @mock_ing_bird prefaced this guy with “he’s using twitter to make his dreams come true!” How could I resist that pitch? AD’s been fan fundraising for his zombie/horror film, “Invasion of the not quite Dead” since like 2006. I suspect “fan fundraising” might be code for “paying the rent” at this point but I won’t split hairs. Indie filmmakers gotta do what they gotta do to eat and keep making films. He and his team are passionate and excited and apparently going to shoot in November. Now, zombies aren’t exactly my bag but I’m incredibly impressed by this guy and his team’s perseverance and persistence—they’re relentless really—and I admire that. It motivates me. Another group I met on Twitter are from the UK and they’ve made this documentary (technically a mockumentary–well, perhaps they would disagree?) on their band, Ferocious Bloodaxe, that plans to change the world through music without music. It’s Scotland’s “quietest band.” Their production value is humble which I can totally appreciate because they’re creating from what they have! And for whatever reason, these guys crack me up. I hope they really do change the world.
The thing that freaks me out is that I’ve already got over 200 followers…in like a week…and I’ve pretty much personally connected with all of them! Now, I realize that’s nothing and quite laughable in Twitter terms. People have thousands and 10’s of thousands and even millions of followers on Twitter. But for me, I’m thinking, I have 200 new people in my life! How am I going to stay connected and keep focused and up to date on all that I’ve already met when more keep following me and I keep following others? It would be a full time job. But, that’s the addiction I think—new connections. By nature, I’m a one on one, must respond personally, get attached easily type of person. So, all I can do is try to keep it real. Bottom line, I’m really enjoying genuinely connecting with those in the Twittersphere—people I would never have the opportunity to connect with on a regular, daily basis. And that’s what I love about it—so far. We shall see if and/or when the shine wears off the new penny.
It’s a wild ride, Twitter, and it has been a wonderfully motivating distraction from my pesky little flu, bug, or whatever that’s ailing me these days. I’m going to get as much motivation from it as I can while the motivation gettin’ is good. I’ll take motivation from wherever I can get it.

Thank you Kelli for the kind words. Talking to people is the best part of twitter. Sure you can be witty in 120 characters (that’s 140 less 20 for the hoped for retweets), and maybe you connect with some, but you need to know. So talk to people. There are an awful lot of people out there who will happily share your vision. Passion means a lot to people, they can get behind that. I’ve made some great friends through Twitter, it’s my pleasure to share them with new people. And who knows, maybe you will get to create something together in the future. I like to be part of that.
