Creating 2015—Day 73:   Smile

I finally had a window to get in to see the amazing Marina at Smile Skin Care Salon this morning.  Let me tell you, I lost about five pounds in hair!  Oh, I love that feeling.  And, she fixed my old man eyebrow hair right up! If you are ever in need of any waxing, I highly recommend Marina at Smile.  I’ve been going to her for at least 15 plus years now and she is amazing—gentle, talented, and such a good person!  I have a close friend who has gone to Rada, the owner, for years and loves her too.  So, you really can’t go wrong with Smile. Until tomorrow, create from what you have…good groomers. Kelli Joan Bennett is a filmmaker, actress, writer, entrepreneur, advocate...

Creating 2015—Day 72:   Officially Admonished

The jury pool—myself included—was sworn in by the court clerk yesterday afternoon at 3pm.  And with being sworn in, the judge officially “admonished” us that we can’t talk about the case.  In plain language, we need to keep our traps shut until after the trial.  No tweets, no Facebook posts, no talking amongst ourselves, no talking to anyone at home.  I have to say the judge seems like a really nice guy.  And he’s rather entertaining.  He clearly respects and loves his job and wants his jury to do the same.  I am not an official juror, just a potential one.  I go back into court today at 1:30pm to continue the process of jury selection.  The first 12 potential jurors...

Creating 2015—Day 71:   Morning Surrender

It’s 4:17am. I am hot.  It’s been like summer out here but we still have our down comforter on the bed.  Not to mention that hot then cold then hot is my new normal.  I’m a Katy Perry song.  I hear the wind pick up and whip around the trees in the back yard.  The Santa Ana’s are just getting warmed up and I have been called to serve jury duty today.  I have to be at the courthouse by 8:15am. The bitter anger from last night has dissipated and I’m left with a calm surrender this morning.  It’s nice.  Surrender.  As a verb it kinda sucks—“declare yourself defeated.”  But as a noun—“giving up fight”—it’s delicious.  I won’t declare myself defeated but I will give up the...

Creating 2015—Day 70:   My Luck Ran Out

I log into My Jury Duty Portal yet again to find out my fate for tomorrow.  F***k me.  I DO have to report.  Ugh!  All I can think is that if I get put on a jury, a trial will more than likely last five to seven days which means everything I scheduled for next week will have to be rescheduled.  Man oh man this sucks. After a solid 20 minutes of whining and complaining about having to report for jury duty tomorrow, I decide to snap the hell out of it and change my bad attitude.  I will be open to it being a new and interesting and positive experience.  Who knows?  I could get an idea for my next movie!  Whatever.  This still sucks. Until tomorrow, create from what you...

Creating 2015—Day 69:   Selma

I log into My Jury Duty Portal yet again to find out my fate for tomorrow. I do NOT have to report!  Yippee!  We celebrate by finally watching my Independent Spirit Awards screener of Selma.  I never got a chance to see it before I voted for the SAG nominations and Tim never got a screener for DGA or PGA awards and then when I finally got a screener for the last awards show of the season I get to vote for, I ran out of time. Which in hindsight is such a shame because it is fantastic!  Moving and shocking and important. This past weekend was the 50th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday”—when Alabama State troopers attacked civil-rights demonstrators outside Selma,...

Creating 2015—Day 68:   Day 2 Excused

I log into My Jury Duty Portal to find out my fate for tomorrow.  I do NOT have to report!  Yippee!  But you know what?  It is impossible to plan anything being in limbo like this.  Oh well.  What are you going to do? Nothing.  It is what it is.  I’m sure there’s some lesson in letting go or patience or detachment from this experience.  I will try and make the best of it.  My plan is to plan things tomorrow for next week.  I need to make appointments with my dentist and my aesthetician—1978 doesn’t even begin to describe me right now.  I need to make an appointment with Hairdresser Tawny to get my roots done and I really need to make an appointment with my...

Creating 2015—Day 67:   What time is it?

I look at the clock.  6:57am.  Wow, we slept a long time last night!  I am surprised by how late it is.  I only realize we sprang forward about an hour later when the telephone time says an hour earlier than the cable.  Oh right, daylight saving time has begun.  We just lost an hour.  Why in the hell do we still do this? A quick Google search and this is the first thing that pops up:  “The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called “Summer Time” in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. Countries have different change dates.”  Well, for me,...

Creating 2015—Day 66:   Doing My Duty

I am on call for Jury Duty this week.  Good times.  I just found out I do not have to go in on Monday.  Yay!  One day down, four to go.  I’ll call in at 6pm Monday night to see if I have to report for duty on Tuesday morning.  Actually, they text me when my reporting instructions have been posted on My Jury Duty Portal—AKA my registration page on their website.  They didn’t have it set up that way a few years ago when I last did my jury duty—I honestly can’t remember what year it was.  Definitely in the last five years.  They have clearly modernized their system a bit.  I was put on an actual jury that time.  It was wild.  We ended up being a hung on three out of the...

Creating 2015—Day 65:   Binging on H.O.C.

Apparently, I am unable to watch House of Cards like a normal person watching a normal television show—one episode a week.  In 48 hours, we have binge watched 10 out of the 13 episodes of the new season. Damn Netflix!  The only reason I haven’t watched the last three is because Tim cut me off last night and made us go to sleep.  It wasn’t easy to do!  With the haunting opening music playing in my head, I couldn’t stop thinking about whether President Underwood was going to kill Doug Stamper.  You know, throw him in front of a train or something.  Please don’t!  For reasons I can’t quite articulate, I love Doug.  He’s driven and tortured and dark and interesting and...
