Creating 2015—Day 107:   A Much-Needed Dose of Mentorship

I had a lovely meeting with Angela C. Lee at Film Independent today.  As part of a Filmmaker Pro membership you get a consultation with the resident producer—who is Angela— to pick their brain about your upcoming project.  Lucky me.  She was delicious!  Smart, seasoned, no-nonsense, and accomplished in a way I aspire to be.  Her labor of love, Songs My Brother Taught Me, a Kickstarter financed indie feature she’d been working on for a few years, premiered at Sundance in January and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize.  I can’t wait to see it.

I was reminded of how much I love connecting with other filmmakers! But more importantly, her energy, experience and expertise were a much-needed, healthy dose of mentorship.  And you know how I love mentors!  Which is exactly what propelled me to reach out and set up the consultation in the first place.  I am so glad I did.  She had great suggestions and referrals for me.  And the best part, she immediately called me on my shit!  The first question on my list of questions for her was, “what should I be looking for in picking my next director?”  She was like, “oh come on, you know what you’re looking for!”  It was awesome.  Just the kick in the ass I needed to stop being such a chicken shit.  It’s time to seriously start searching for my next director and producing partner, make some decisions and make my movie!

Until tomorrow, create from what you have…a breath of fresh mentorship.
