Creating 2015—Day 102:   Super Soul Sunday

This is week two of what I hope to be a new ritual for me.  Watching Super Soul Sunday with Oprah on Sunday mornings at 8am PT. I watched a few of them on demand and loved the energy, the message and how I felt after watching. I just listened to Jon Kabat-Zinn, a scientist and pioneer of using mindfulness in medicine and author of the new book, “Mindfulness For Beginners“, talk with Oprah about what mindfulness is and how he practices it. Here are some gems from the talk… “I see mindfulness as a love affair with life.” “Mindfulness is not a concept, it is a practice.” “Mindfulness is simple but not easy.” “Mindfulness is paying attention and the awareness...

Creating 2015—Day 101:   Social Media Saturday

I finally got an official Facebook page set up for my indie film Collusions! Don’t get me wrong.  I hate Facebook.  I only use my Facebook pages for my company, my actor and my films.  I have a personal account only because they make you have one in order to create pages.  I have no friends.  I created a Facebook page for Collusions right after we finished shooting back in 2013 but I did something wrong and Facebook literally shut me out of the account even though I created it.  🙁  I emailed them a million times but hit a wall every way I turned.  Logic did not dictate on their part.  I wasn’t happy. Yeah, probably why they bug me so much. But, everyone I know is on it...

Creating 2015—Day 100:   Happy Birthday, Boo!

I got motivated and did some shopping yesterday.  No, I can’t say any of the presents I found are particularly surprising, shocking or awe inducing but I think I got some nice ones.  Ones he will like, will use and laugh at. Tonight we have dinner reservations at a steak house in Glendale we’ve wanted to try for a while now and I’m making him his favorite breakfast: pancakes and bacon.  And this weekend, instead of any trips out of town or outrageous nights on the town, his birthday wish is to lie on his couch, watch the Yankees, NASCAR, the Masters and Game of Thrones all weekend.  Granted! Until tomorrow, create from what you have…a partner’s birthday. Kelli Joan...

Creating 2015—Day 99:   Is a relationship over if you’ve run out of ideas for crazy, fun, or special birthday presents?

Is a relationship over if you’ve run out of ideas for crazy, fun, or special birthday presents?  That was my second thought this morning.  My first was what in the hell am I going to get Uh-mazing Romantic Partner for his birthday this year? I used to be good at birthday presents.  Really good.  Surprise, shock and awe kind of good.  I shot my wad early in our relationship though.  When you start at a sexy mansion in Malibu the very first year you’re setting the bar high and it’s hard to top it.  But top it I did.  Jaw dropping topped it on the second year’s birthday, thank you very much.  And the coup de grâce was year five’s birthday surprise in Las Vegas....

Creating 2015—Day 98:   Make It Happen

It’s such an odd push and pull between making something happen and forcing it to happen—at least for me anyway.  There are moments when I absolutely freak out that NOTHING is happening and if I don’t make something happen it never will.  That’s when I start forcing shit.  That’s when things suck.  When I am inspired and passionate and ready for change I am enlivened, invigorated, empowered and excited to make something happen.  That’s when things fall in place.  That’s when it really starts happening. “Making it happen” has been a theme in my career for the last almost 20 years.  I’ve never been good at waiting especially waiting for the powers that be to deem me worthy...

Creating 2015—Day 97:   Capturing Water

In case you haven’t heard, California is in a massive drought.  A potentially catastrophic one.  Our governor just threw down a mandate for the state to lower its water usage by 25%.  That’s a shit ton. Even before Governor Brown announced his freak out about water, I had read an article by NASA scientist Jay Famiglietti a few weeks earlier who was like, “hey, is anyone paying attention to the fact that we’ll be out of water in a year?”  Then, I saw the same scientist on Real Time with Bill Maher about a week or two later.  That’s when I told Uh-mazing Romantic Partner we were going to have to get serious about saving water. Especially if he wants to keep his very green...

Creating 2015—Day 96:   Out of Gas

I got nothing right now!  I am completely out of gas.  The day wasn’t particularly grueling.  I’m pretty sure what is behind my gas-less-ness is a period and Easter Sunday.  Yesterday Aunt Flo arrived and I felt like shit. I didn’t want to feel like shit.  So, we decided to have a little Easter Sunday fun.  We went grocery shopping, bought filets and Cadbury eggs, came home and cracked open a bottle of the nectar:  the Caymus 40th Anniversary we bought up in Napa Valley.  And there you have it. Here is me Sunday preparing for my kind of Easter celebration… Until tomorrow, create from what you have…an empty tank. Kelli Joan Bennett is a filmmaker, actress, writer,...

Creating 2015—Day 95:   On The Path

I am on my morning walk, talking on the phone with my Aunt Wanda when I come across an open magazine on the side of the road.  Across both of the pages in white bold letters reads DEATH.  It stops me in my tracks.  It looks as if it was left there on purpose just for me to see.  A message?  A sign?  A reminder?  The title of my next film is Death Over 3 Bottles of Wine.  I refer to it as simply “death.” I automatically put my Aunt on speakerphone and snap a picture of it.  Why?  I don’t know other than it’s a reflex these days.  But also, I think I want to capture this particularly odd, mystical, magical moment before it slips away and I forget it.  Like...
