Creating 2015—Day 131, 132, 133:   I’m Back!

Sorry about that!  I had some health stuff last couple of days and couldn’t bang out any posts.  But now I’m back!  Three days in one.  And I’m pondering what in the hell I’m doing with my life!  What are you doing?  What are we all doing with our lives?!? Whew.  I needed to get that out. I’m sure that we are all probably just doing our best at any given moment.  As my acting coach, Julie Ariola says, “If you could do any better you would.” I’m not going to lie though; I feel like I could be doing a wee bit better—working harder, taking better care of myself, sleeping better, being more thoughtful, being kinder, being more positive, eating healthier, managing my...

Creating 2015—Day 130:   Happy Mother’s Day!

I have the most incredible mother in the world!  Seriously.  Joan Bennett is the best mom IN THE WORLD.  She’s my rock, my cheerleader, my savior, my inspiration, my voice of reason, my friend and my hero.  She raised six kids and was married to the love of her life for 56 years. She’s gorgeous, talented, kind, ambitious, the life of the party and is kicking ass at 75 years young.  She still works everyday in her business, Bennett’s Furniture Refinishing.  She mows her own lawn, grows her own garden and catches her own fish. She believes in teaching someone how to fish instead of giving handouts.  She believes in her children, her grandchildren, and family always being...

Creating 2015—Day 129:   Graduation Weekend!

This weekend I have not one but two graduations in my family—from the same sister!  How she managed that, I’m not sure.  Pretty impressive timing!  Today is the college graduation of my niece and godchild (and our site’s College Desk contributor) Alexandra Joan Bennett. At 21 years old, she’s insanely smart, talented, gorgeous and about to start her first official job with her newly earned degree in economics next month.  I’m so crazy proud of this kid! And tomorrow, we are celebrating both Alex’s college graduation and her brother and my nephew John Robert Pollard’s high school graduation.  He’ll be starting college this coming fall with a major in computer...

Creating 2015—Day 128:   “Hot Pursuit”

Despite the critics’ scathing reviews of Hot Pursuit I went and saw it this afternoon.  I gotta support the ladies—a female driven film directed by a woman!  Written by dudes, which doesn’t surprise me.  No, it certainly wasn’t The Heat.  No, it wasn’t terribly fresh.  Nor was it terribly good.  But, yes, I laughed out loud often while watching it!  Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara are both so talented and good with physical comedy, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them do their thing. And I must say, the theatre was surprisingly full at 2pm today!  I was completely shocked to see anyone else there.  I sat in between two women, not sure their age or ethnicity, but...

Creating 2015—Day 127: An Unexpected Lunch

After a pitch meeting this morning I was able to get with my crazy talented writer friend Sylvia Jaunzarins for lunch!  I threw it out to her last minute since I would be going right by her place…just in case we could coordinate and connect.  And we were able to.  What a treat!   We only had an hour, but what a motivating hour it was!  We’ve both got screenplays we’re in the nascent stage of packaging and launching into pre-production and we’ve been meeting once a week, give or take, since the end of last year to push each other forward on the projects.  It’s really delicious.  The support.  The camaraderie.  The holding each other accountable.  Especially that. ...

Creating 2015—Day 126: Tawny Blonde Goodness

Fresh roots!!!! I just took these pics, one in the front room with natural light and one in the bathroom.  It’s crazy what a difference lighting makes!  Keep in mind it’s been hours since I got my hair done.  I’ve run around all day and messed up all of Tawny’s good work.  It’s a tad flat and stringy now.  But you’ll get the idea. Yes, I saw Hairdresser Tawny today.  She fixed my roots right up and freshened up my overall look in a mere hour and 15 minutes.  I didn’t want to leave because I adore hanging out with her so much but I had to run to my next appointment. I should have taken a selfie right after she was finished because it looked so...

Creating 2015—Day 125: Happy Cinco de Mayo!

No, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day.  That is September 16th according to Wikipedia.  Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the day the Mexican army defeated French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.  For some, like me in my younger days, Cinco de Mayo was the “Dia de Margarita.”  In English: The day of the margarita—one of my favorite cocktails and the perfect excuse to have one even in the middle of the week.  I haven’t actually had a margarita in a really long time.  Sounds so good!  But unfortunately, I’m still on a cleanse and margaritas are not on the menu.  So, I raise my imaginary Cadillac margarita on the rocks with salt to...

Creating 2015—Day 124: Sleepy Monday

Not going to lie.  Today was a total wash!  I am normally energized on Mondays.  I love them.  But instead, I had a serious case of narcolepsy.  I took a bike ride late morning in an attempt to wake up but I promptly took a long nap afterwards so it obviously didn’t work well.  It crossed my mind I might be coming down with something because I was so deliriously tired all day in spite of having slept almost eight hours last night.  We shall see what tomorrow brings.  I hope it is energy as opposed to sickness.  Fingers crossed.  Back to sleep for me. Until tomorrow, create from what you have…unexplained fatigue. Kelli Joan Bennett is a filmmaker, actress, writer,...

Creating 2015—Day 123: Super Soul Sunday with Janet Mock

Janet Mock is Redefining Realness.  Born Charles, her father’s first son, she instinctively knew and identified as a girl as early as age three.  Fascinating stuff!  And inspiring.  Incredibly inspiring.  The courage it took her to step into her authentic self makes my jaw drop.  I marvel at her bravery, her conviction, her strength to say, “this is who I am.”  And not only to say it, to live it.  I also marvel at her crystal clear clarity.  The fact she so clearly knew who she was!  I often feel like I’m still trying to figure that out!  Who am I?  Or, more likely, I’m still trying to figure out who the world will accept and celebrate me as.  In other words, who is the...

Creating 2015—Day 122: Saturday Smile & Carousel

I got to see the amazing Marina at Smile this morning.  Long overdue as usual.  But since I wait so long, it always feels like such a treat to see her—yes, for the wonderful work she does of de-hairing me, but also because she’s such a lovely person to chat with for an hour. The second treat for the day was going to Carousel for lunch.  I do believe I have officially burned myself out on it after today though.  Full disclosure: I was just there yesterday for lunch too!  And like a week ago and a week prior.  I went nuts with Carousel!  An indication of my obsessive personality.  Although my obsessions don’t last too long because now I need a break.  An indication of my...
