Day 173: Do you respect what you have?

Day 173.  If you know me well then you know I’ve been driving the same red truck for the last 18 years.  This truck has pretty much been with me through all the big stuff in life—marriage, divorce, diets, company formations, company sales, good times, bad times, success, failure, road trips to Vegas—you name it, Red has gotten me there.  I’m crazy about this truck.  Now, Red is getting old—really old.  So old that some day in the not so distant future, she’s going to have to be put out to pasture or just put down period.  When I moved into the house I live in now—going on 8 years ago this coming December—Red got parked on the street because, bless her heart, she’s...

Day 170: One week left!

Day 170. I’m back on my writing crusade—starting tomorrow morning.  I know, I know.  I should have been writing today.  But the weekend was so busy with work, today felt like Sunday instead of Monday and I needed to take it off!  I didn’t really take it off, I spent the day puttering around and finally getting organized in the Twittersphere.  I have only one main twitter account for my company and me—we’re a combo plate.  I deactivated the other one.  Consolidation felt so right and so good.  I also started a twitter account for my documentary. You can follow us on twitter here: Think Outside The Box Inside The Box and me: https://twitter.com/#!/FromWhatYouHave High...

Day 169: My Two Dads

Day 169.  No, this isn’t the title of a progressive, gay sitcom.  I’m just blessed with two dads.  One in Missouri, without whose swimmers I wouldn’t be here and for whom I’m so thankful for and who I adore and love dearly.  And I have another one in California, my California Dad—Uncle Fred.  Just like my Aunt Wanda, Uncle Fred became my Dad-on-the-spot whenever I needed any dad duties taken care of—oil changes, mufflers falling off, windshield wipers gone crazy, gas money, fun times and tons of love and guidance.  Ditto on the adore and love dearly for the second one.  I got to have breakfast with CA Dad and then I got to have a nice, long phone call with MO Dad...

Day 168: Notes!

Day 168.  Five hours later, with Screenwriter Cindy’s eyes glazed over like a zombie, my first notes session on project number 2 is complete!  I’m really, really, really happy about how it went.  I know the notes I gave her are going to strengthen and build on what she’s already done—going from good to great.  I gave her notes that I felt I would appreciate and be able to execute as a writer.  I had this literary manager who was a total nightmare. She would give notes one session and then totally change her mind and give totally different notes the next.  Joie de vivre can back me up on this.  It was one of the worst creative experiences of my life—and it lasted...

Day 167: 199 to go?!?

Day 167. My days left in my Yearlong Experiment in Prolific Creativity went from 200 to 199 today. What the…?!?  Crazy!  Freakin’ crazy!  The year is freakin’ flying!  I’m trying not to freak out but it’s totally freaking me out!!!!! Okay, glad I got that out.  Calming down, people, calming down.  Or am I?  No, I’m not really any calmer now than before I typed the above sentences.  I did scream though.  That felt nice.  But now the “nice” is gone.  Wow.  F*@K me.  I gotta calm my ass down.  Yesterday I blamed my distracted state on social media, today I have no such excuse. I probably shouldn’t admit this considering I want to instill confidence in my...

Day 166: Social Media is distracting me!

Day 166. What is it about social media that stops me from doing any actual real work?!?  All week I’ve made a point of not letting myself check Facebook or Twitter or even my own website’s comments or emails until the end of the day, AFTER I’d actually done something.  This morning, I made the mistake of doing it backwards.  I checked everything before I started writing.  Big mistake.  Next thing I know, hours have passed and I haven’t worked on my script yet!  Oy. I realize for those who are in marketing twitting and facebooking and such is their actual job.  But the world at large has to actually operate and function from doing things and making things and...

Day 165: From All Angles

Day 165.  I just signed up to take a weekend class by producer Mark Stolaroff called The Art & Science of No-Budget Filmmaking.  Sounds perfect for what I’m doing, huh?  I discovered this guy’s site by accident when I stumbled on an article he’d written about which camera to use for your no budget film.  To paraphrase something I read that he said, “Who cares which camera you use?  Just make your movie.”  How could I not fall in love with that attitude?  I think he’ll bring a different perspective to what I’m setting out to do with my films.  I’m sure he comes at filmmaking from a completely different angle than my two mentors.  And I want to “see” from as...

Day 164: Almost in the Groove

Day 164.  It’s day 2 of week 2 of the Writing Crusade.  I’m up to page 62—that’s seven new pages.  Yay!  I’m pretty happy about that but I’m supposed to have 14 new pages by the end of today.  Well, that’s not going to happen.  Oops.  I’m behind.  But, I feel like I’m just on the edge of “it” kicking in.  “It” being that writing flow sweet spot—where you sit down to write, don’t move for 10 hours and before you know it, you’ve written 15 pages.  That hasn’t happened yet.  But I’m close.  I’m almost in the groove.  I realized today that the problem is I’m in the desert of the second act and I’m lost—really lost.  I know what my mid point is, I know what my second act...
