Day 163: The Secret Ingredient

Day 163: The Secret Ingredient

Day 163.  I officially pass the editing baton for the documentary to my producing partner this morning.  He’s the one sitting in the fancy editing bay now.  He’s the one sifting through all the footage and the scripts and working with Dan the Amazing Editor Man now.  I’m the one in my new office, writing.  I love it!  It’s going smoothly until I hear, “hey Kel, do you know if we put the Grozier call anywhere?”  “Yes, we did.  Let me think where it went in.”  I momentarily take the familiar seat where I spent so many hours during my editing crusade.  “It should be in scene 5.”  It is not in scene 5.  It’s in the card bin but somehow I never transferred it over to Dan the...

Day 162: Hide and Seek

Day 162.  How can I fully disengage from my projects and my work when I write a daily report about them?  It crosses my mind to just post some quote on rest or disengaging or alone time this morning.  But examining the urge to check out seems much more interesting.  I’m a big checker outer.  I need my space.  I’ve been known to “go under” or “go to the desert” as I call it and not resurface for weeks.  This daily public exercise has not made that possible this year.  I can’t go to the desert.  Well, I can, I just have to bring my laptop and make sure there’s access to Wi-Fi.  Bottom line, I can’t hide.  I chose a daily report and report daily I must.  What was I...

Day 161: Break

Day 161.  I wake up and know immediately the weekend is being taken off.  48 hours.  No writing, no creating, no thinking outside inside anything, just slowing down, long walks, good food and sleep.  Hello, Saturday.  I’ve missed you. The reason for the 48-hour break is because I woke up from an anxiety dream.  I am on the set of a film.  I’d been cast in a part but I don’t know what, exactly, the part is.  I can’t get my tooth in and then, it breaks off!  I freak out.  Then the director comes over and talks to me about how she only wants me wearing underwear and nothing else.  “I hope that’s okay with you,” she says.  First, I panic about the fact that my underwear is...

Day 160: Time to get creative!

Day 160.  Over tea with Dear Friend this morning, it dawns on me there’s nothing else to do right now but creative work in the form of script development and writing.  Well, of course, there are tons of other things I could do for my new venture but the creative work is the priority right now.  Why?  Because I want to make a freakin’ movie!  I’m supposed to make three freakin’ movies!  This year.  Sheesh.  Thus, this creative work is what has to get done before I can move forward with any of the film projects. I met with Screenwriter Monica and Director Brenda this afternoon to check in on that project.  Screenwriter Monica feels good about the revised outline she’s...

Day 159: Dreams in Disguise

Day 159.  I drive home from a lunch meeting, tired and sweaty.  It’s hot out.  A preview of what’s to come later in the summer.  It is days like these I can’t believe I haven’t gotten a new vehicle that has air conditioning.  Despite the heat I endure three months out of the year, I resist.  I do love my old red truck so.  Besides its sentimental value, its low upkeep is right in alignment with my pocketbook.  “One of these days I’ll get a new one,” I mumble.  Of course, I’ve been saying that for the last ten years.  But really, seriously, I’m not kidding, one of these days. I want to drive straight home and get in the air conditioned house but our lack of toothpaste...

Day 158: The More Mentors the Merrier!

Day 158.  I’m an extra lucky woman today.  And not just for the obvious reasons of health, Uh-mazing Romantic Partner, fabulous family, friends and food in the fridge.  I’m extra lucky because an awesome mentor has just mentored me!  That almost sounds dirty, doesn’t it?  I like it!  To be clear, I’m not talking about my Women in Film mentor.  I’m still working to schedule a meeting with her, which I’m super excited about.  She seems amazing.  I got to briefly meet her associate on May 29th because they invited me to the US premiere of Snow White and The Huntsman.  Super cool.  But I’m off track.  The mentor I met with this morning unexpectedly came from a dear friend...

Day 157: Wanna connect?

Day 157. The theme for this month is connecting.  So, let’s connect! I don’t know when, how, where or why yet but we’re going to connect.  I’m looking forward to it.  I’m excited to connect with people I love, people I adore but rarely see, people I haven’t seen in a long time, people I don’t know and people I can’t even imagine connecting with—the unexpected, the surprise and the dream connections. Bring it on landline, iPhone, email, texts, twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, restaurants, grocery store lines, and sidewalks.  Let the connecting begin! Oh, and I’ll say this in advance: I can’t wait to see you! I can’t wait to see you again! I can’t wait to meet you for...

Day 155: A Small Crack in the Case!

Day 155.  Finally.  I had a breakthrough with the male character I’ve been so stuck on!  Poor guy.  I’ve known what he does but not why.  Which is a big problem.  I can’t get to the why without knowing who they are.  Who someone is—their background, upbringing, relationships, experiences, etc.—determines how they act and what they do and what they say in any given situation or circumstance.  It has made writing his dialogue a challenge because he’s just a shell, a catalyst, a prop to move forward plot and my character in her story…until now.  Now, he’s starting to form.  Now he has the beginnings of some life in him.  I’m starting to find his legs.  He still needs...

Day 154: Artist As Entrepreneur

Day 154.  I received a package yesterday.  It contained a 12×12 canvas of my friend May Charter’s photograph.  I purchased it from her artist Instacanvas page, which is apparently an offshoot of Instagram?  I pretty much know nothing about either one because I’m not a photographer.  The photograph on the canvas is beautiful.  It was super easy to order.  It was fairly inexpensive as art goes.  It got here in just a couple days.  In a nutshell, it was a piece of cake to support my friend’s art.  I love it!  She is an artist being an entrepreneur.  It has me thinking about the very idea of creative people monetizing their work.  Today, more than ever, it’s possible...
