Day 197: Better Retrograde Than Never

Day 197.  Today is the first day of Mercury in retrograde!  Now, now.  Don’t roll your eyes at me.  Don’t click away.  Stick with me.  I’m not an astrologist and this in no way is going to be a lesson in it or even my two cents on its validity or insanity.  But I know a wonderful woman who is an astrologist, Silvia Guersenzvaig from the Esalen Institute up in Big Sur.  I try and connect with her at least once a year—yes, to hear what the stars have to say but mainly to be in her energy.  She’s an incredibly beautiful soul and I love being around her.  I think astrology has a unique lens and I’m always interested in different perspectives.  Do I live my life by the...

Day 196: Postcard Pick-me-up!

Day 196.  I received a voicemail today at 12:08pm from Eye Doc Sis: “Hey, Kel, it’s Lori.  I was just going to tell you I had this patient come in today.  She goes, ‘oh I just got this little dream card, I’m so excited about filling it out!’  I’m like, ‘what?’  Then I was like, ‘oh wow,’ I go, ‘oh, that’s my sister’s big project she’s working on.’  She goes, ‘yeah, I’m really excited!’  And I was like, ‘oh, well, good!’ Gosh, that’s pretty cool, I guess people just grab those cards and some people get into it.  So, anyway, I just wanted to tell you that.  It was kinda cool!” Kinda cool?  Kinda incredible!  Oh, how happy hearing this voicemail made me!  It actually made...

Day 195: Nuggets not to be ignored!

Day 195.  Ignore Everybody!  It’s not my suggestion it’s Hugh MacLeod’s who wrote the book, Ignore Everybody, and 39 Other Keys to Creativity.  I bought the book on title alone.  How could I resist?  I finished reading it over a year and a half ago.  How do I know?  Well, I know because of my trusty handwritten note on the inside cover!  It reads, “12-27-10 – Some great nuggets!!  🙂  —Kelli Joan Bennett.” It’s on my mind because I had dinner with a wonderfully talented actor friend on Monday and the book came up.  My Talented Actor Friend has a rather big, impressive day job in the lawyer world.  In general he has the best of both worlds—financial security and time to...

Day 194: Read to Travel

Day 194.  Jack Kerouac is taking me On the Road.  I’m reading the original scroll, not the 1957 edition.  It’s research for a character in my screenplay.  I love reading—novels, non-fiction, self-help, memoirs, classics, More magazine, tweets—you name it, I probably like to read it.  Reading is like traveling to me—another love of mine.  Instead of being on a bus or on a plane or on my feet, I’m traveling on words. “There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep on rolling under the stars.” ―Jack Kerouac, On the Road:  The Original Scroll   Until tomorrow, create from what you have…reading. Kelli Joan Bennett is a filmmaker, actress, writer, entrepreneur, advocate...

Day 193: “W” is for Wednesday & Writing!

Day 193.  Okay, that’s it!  I’m putting my foot down this hump day morning.  I have got to write today!  I had a really good hit on my script yesterday afternoon while I was on a walk—which reminds me of an awesome article I read recently by Christy Birmingham, “Easy Ways to Generate Ideas for your next Hub” that reminded me to keep an eye out for inspiration and ideas during exercise!  Thanks, Christy.  So today, it’s time to put my ideas into action.  After my writing crusade ended on June 22nd, I was still 20 pages short of a first draft!  Oy.  20 pages might as well be a million.  So, I won’t think about all 20 of those pages I need to write.  I’m just...

Day 192: Power

Day 192.  It’s hot outside.  The air conditioner cranks out much needed coolness.  In the midst of diligently answering my @connects on Twitter this afternoon, the power goes out.  There’s a split second moment where I don’t understand what’s happening.  Why are the lights not on?  My laptop still works because it automatically goes onto battery power.  But the wi-fi connection is gone.  Okay, the power is out.  Did we blow a circuit?  Nope.  Must be a neighborhood power outage.  We’re not the only ones blasting the air conditioning today.  Literally losing power has me thinking about figuratively losing power.  The main reason I began this yearlong experiment in...

Day 191: Rest, glorious rest!

Day 191.  10 hours.  Yeah, that’s right—10 delicious, rejuvenating hours of shuteye.  That’s what I’m talkin’ bout! I’m one of those people who can’t do “no sleep” very often.  My body needs it—a lot of it.  Always has.  The college days of pots of coffee and NoDoz are long gone for me.  I now prefer chamomile tea and sleep. Ahhhhhhhh. I must take a moment and give thanks that I was able to stop everything yesterday and just rest.  I watched the Wimbledon Federer/Murray match and the Yankees/Red Sox game.  Both of my favs won.  Amazing day. And now, it’s Monday—my time “to begin” again, anew and all over.  I love Mondays!  They are so fresh and full of promise.  The...

Day 189: A Day of Connecting & Creativity!

Day 189:  After 7 ½ hours of creative meetings, with a break in between to see a screening of the film I shot in March, (Homecoming), I’ve lost my voice!  Seriously, can’t talk, laryngitis style.  Crazy.  But, the good news is, I loved the cut of the film and I had two incredible notes sessions with my wonderful screenwriters!  I’m so excited!  We’re really getting somewhere.  Which reminds me, I need to get somewhere with my own script, too.  I’d say I’ll start another writing crusade but the last one failed so I think I need something new.  Hmmmm.  Maybe I’ll just crack open the script and start writing tomorrow?  Nah.  I’m taking tomorrow off.  Fill my creative...

Day 188: Dream Bonanza!

Day 188.  I wait the usual two weeks before I go check the PO Box again.  Why do I wait so long when it makes me so happy to receive dreams?  My fear the box will be dreamless.  But, today is the day.  The two-week mark.  Dreams or no dreams, I’m going to check.  Last time, there was only one dream—one beautiful, very serious dream—waiting for me.  Oh the joy.  But, I have no idea what will be waiting for me today, if anything.  I reluctantly switch from my pajama bottoms to a pair of acceptable shorts for public consumption.  I grab my keys, jump in my truck and drive to the Post Office.  I walk into the lobby and head towards PO Box 12087.  I look down at my key...
